So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish!

Posted by HJfod on 05.07.2026

Hello!

If I had to throw a guess, then you're probably here from Twitter or Discord or wherever you saw my announcement image. To confirm the news right off the bat, yes: I have officially retired from making GD mods. This means that I will no longer be actively leading Geode's development, and I won't be updating my mods like BetterEdit and GDShare anymore. In this post, I would like to explain why I am doing this, and what I'll be doing going forward.

But first, a quick FAQ:

Will Geode no longer be developed?

Geode's development will continue as before! We have a big team working on it, and while I am one of its founders and have been the so-called "CEO of Geode" for years now, I am ready to pass my torch along to the other team members. I am also still staying in the team chats to offer advice and make managerial decisions if needed, but I have not written actual code for Geode for a long time now, so really this will not affect Geode in any way.

Will BetterEdit no longer be developed?

Yes, BetterEdit is now officially abandonware. I will not be fixing any bugs nor adding new features. When the next GD update comes, BetterEdit will stop working, and I will not bring it back. I'd recommend installing other editor mods from Geode to replace BE. Tinker for example is pretty awesome!

Why?

That is what I am going to spend the rest of this blog on, so strap in!

When I got interested in making GD mods back in late 2020, the GD modding scene as we know it today did not exist. At all. There were a few early modders here and there making small hacks and there was Mega Hack, but that's it. There was no Globed, certainly no Geode, there weren't even really any useful modding tools in the first place. There was just a bunch of disconnected friends with ideas trying stuff out. And this group is what I joined in late 2020, with a goal of simply making an integrated version of the GDShare application I had made.

Pretty quickly after I joined however, some very interesting things started happening. A modder known as Andre released a little project called Cappuccino, which we could nowadays recognize as the very first ancestor of Geode. Of course, it was nothing remotely even close to Geode – it wasn't even a mod loader – but it was enough to spark me into getting really invested in this new modding hobby. Soon enough, I had made a cool menu animation, ported GDShare, and got started on a little new project I called BetterEdit.

This was all in early 2021. By June of that year, GD modding had blown up from the extremely nïche small friend group making small hacks to a community-wide phenomenon – and me and a few of my friends were at the forefront of it all. BetterEdit was one of the most popular mods at the time, and my Discord server dedicated to modding quickly reached over 10k members. By July, me and my friends Mat and PoweredByPie also got started on our most ambitious project yet: a mod loader that would offer state-of-the-art tools for modders and a centralized in-game marketplace to download mods from. A mod loader that we initially called Lilac, but after a merger with another similar project ended up getting the name Geode.

This concludes the history portion of this blog. Trust me, I skipped like all of the details there, and hopefully some day I will make a video going through the history of GD modding in detail. But the point here is that ever since December 2020, I have spent thousands of hours of my life making mods for this silly little cube game. And it has been absolutely awesome. The priviledge of being able to pioneer and lead a modding community for a game I have played for over a decade is frankly incomprehensible. And I am so happy about it all.

However, over the years of running Geode and working on my own mods, I have slowly been losing interest and getting bored. And I mean dgmw, any person who pulls 11-hour days writing code for a mod loader is bound to get exhausted at some point. I've taken breaks and come back more energetic than before in the past, but this time feels different. You see, I decided at some point years ago that when the day came that I would inevitably retire from modding GD, I would like to have my mods be "finished". Of course, there is no precise definition for what that means when everything could always be improved, but I knew there would be a feeling I'd have when I felt like my mods were enough. And right now, I feel that.

Of course, this is not to pretend like all of my mods don't have any issues – BetterEdit has over 500 of them. But unlike when I left it in 2.1, it doesn't have any major bugs. It isn't missing any major obvious features. It is, to my own satisfaction, done. And the same goes for all of my other mods, not least of all Geode, which has been practically finished for over two years now. Sure, we still have things we could and would like to still add and fix, but the mod loader is now available on all four major platforms, it has a very complete and thorough featureset, and it has a vibrant and active community.

In addition to all of this – me losing interest and my mods being complete – I have also managed to fill my life with, like, a million other hobbies. I spend a lot less time on my computer than I did back in 2022. There are months when I barely even open my PC up once. Even if I wanted to, I simply wouldn't have the time to work on mods anymore. It already takes me weeks to reply to Discord DMs, and there is no way in hell I'd be able to find the time to sit down and write code.

And so, a few months ago, I decided it's probably time to call it quits. I am so happy with what I have been able to accomplish during my time making GD mods, and it's time to pass the torch on. Thank you all for the years of fun and support, and cya <3

(P.S. What will I do now?)

For the most part I'll be living my life, but I've also been trying to get back in making YouTube videos for, like, years now. I'd like to be able to make a bunch of videos on GD modding to share all of the knowledge I've accumulated over the years, like going through the history of modding and making tutorials and whatnot. But we'll have to see if anything ever materializes out of that. Like I said, I don't spend much time on my PC anymore. But I'd hope to make a video or two!

((P.P.S. What if I want to take over BetterEdit?))

BetterEdit is open-source and you are free to take inspiration or just straight up copy any code from it. You can even copy the entire mod if you so wish, although I wouldn't recommend doing that as maintaining someone else's codebase can be very tough. And I do have one condition: you can not call your mod BetterEdit. Even if you make practically the same mod, change the name and logo to something else. BetterEdit is my legacy, not your reanimated corpse.

As for my other mods, contact me if you'd like to take them over! You can also just release your own versions, but I'd recommend contacting me so we can avoid a billion people making the same mod.
